The Focus Course

Passion and Personality

Shawn, Myke, and Stephen talk about the required tradeoffs for showing up every day to work on your passion projects. They discuss how to build an audience, how to push through negativity and cynicism, and how to build something with a strong foundation.

Highlights, Takeaways, and Quick Wins

  • Showing up every day requires sacrifice and tradeoffs. As Myke was trying to gain traction on his podcast, The Bro Show, he would spend most of his evenings and weekends to build it. He had a day job, and then he sacrificed the rest of his time to work on building his podcast.
  • To build something with a strong foundation, you need passion. If you’re not in love with the project or the thing you are building, then you won’t be willing to sacrifice for it, you won’t be able to put in the long hours it takes over the years and years in order to keep building it.
  • Passion also helps you push through the negativity, the cynicism, and the haters. You don’t care what they say because you love what you do.
  • Passion and personality also help you grow your audience. You’re honing your craft while growing your audience and building relationships with them. Allowing your personality to come forth is a great way to have more fun in your work and also build your audience.
  • People have a creative fire in them. Everyone has it, not everyone knows what it is. Find your passion and then double down on it. Keep showing up every day to hone your craft and ship your work. Also, talent is key. You’ve got to get better at what you do.
