Rules for Sabbatical (Rest)
How to rest well
Plan Your Time
- How much time do you have?
- What can you realistically fit in?
- Near or Far? (i.e. where you’ll spend your time)
- Be intentional with the time you have
Know Yourself
- What rejuvenates you?
- What drains you?
- Stay within your limitations (Physically, emotionally…)
- Avoid counterfeit rest
Check in with Yourself
(How are you Feeling, and what do you need?)

Mentally
Emotionally
Relationally
Physically
Spiritually
I usually need to journal this out with pen and paper.
Arrange for Stillness (As quickly as possible)
- Come down from the busyness of life
- Try to get out of the shallows (bouncing from thing to thing, mentally or physically)
- In our connected culture, we rarely give ourselves permission to be still
- The point of rest feels unproductive, and that is the point
(We’re addicted to Productivity)
Get into Nature
- Beauty helps us heal
- Do the approachable version (The goal is to do it!)
- Doesn’t have to be a grand gesture
- Walk, Hike, Sit
Limit Technology
- If you’re able, turn your phone off for a short period
- Try not to use Technology Tools if Possible
- Avoid Inboxes and Feeds
Engage in Play
- What’s going to bring you joy?
- What is your particular form of playfulness?
- Artifacts of a Joyful Life (Engage in the present Moment)
